¿Qué es la leishmaniosis?
La leishmaniosis es una enfermedad zoonótica (afecta también al ser humano) parasitaria causada por un protozoo. Se transmite a través de la picadura de un “mosquito” del género flebótomo.
Mallorca es zona de riesgo de la enfermedad, ya que es el hábitat natural del flebótomo. Es por esa razón que la leishmaniosis es una enfermedad muy habitual en nuestras mascotas.
¿Qué puedo hacer para prevenir a mi mascota de la enfermedad?
Existen varios productos como las pipetas y los collares que poseen un compuesto repelente, protegiendo así a nuestro perro de que el mosquito pueda picarle.
Otros tratamientos de prevención actúan frente a la inmunidad celular, ayudando al organismo a que su respuesta contra la infección sea más eficaz.
Puede vacunar a su perro contra la leishmaniosis a partir de los seis meses de edad. La vacuna consiste en tres primeras dosis iniciales y un recordatorio anual.
La domperidona también es un compuesto efectivo para la prevención de la enfermedad que se puede administrar como jarabe diariamente durante un mes, tres veces al año, más indicado en los meses de junio, octubre y febrero.
No hay ningún tratamiento preventivo que evite la picadura del mosquito ni la infección de la enfermedad al 100%, pero podemos conseguir la máxima eficacia posible con la combinación de un repelente (pipeta o collar) y un inmunomodulador (vacuna o jarabe).
¿Cómo puedo saber si mi mascota tiene leishmaniosis?
La leishmaniosis es una enfermedad con una sintomatología muy diversa e inespecífica, es por ese motivo que muchas veces los propietarios no son conscientes de que su animal puede estar enfermo. Cuando un mosquito infectado pica a nuestra mascota el organismo suele responder con una reacción defensiva ineficaz e insuficiente la mayoría de veces, sin impedir que el parásito pueda diseminarse y afectar a múltiples órganos.
Los síntomas que puede tener un perro infectado son apatía, debilidad, disminución del apetito, anorexia, artrosis, problemas renales, problemas oculares, vasculitis, lesiones en la piel, sangrados nasales…
Para evitar y hacer frente a la enfermedad, el propietario debe conocer la enfermedad y prevenirla adecuadamente.
Si duda, es importante que acudas a nuestra clínica para realizar un test diagnóstico o las pruebas necesarias en cada caso para descartar la posibilidad de que el animal esté infectado y, en caso de necesitarlo, recibir el tratamiento más adecuado para su situación.
¿Existe tratamiento para la leishmaniosis?
Hay diversos fármacos para el tratamiento de la enfermedad, aunque la elección del más adecuado y de su posología depende del estado infeccioso del animal.
Aún así, el tratamiento de la enfermedad no es completamente curativo, el perro estará infectado toda su vida y tendrá que someterse a controles periódicos de su veterinario.
Es por eso, que es importante una buena prevención de la enfermedad.
